The couple started caring for Brianna in tragic circumstances: they were best friends with Brianna's parent's, Brian and Catherene Johnson, before a car accident killed the pair on April 23, 2021. Brianna was trapped in the vehicle for four hours before she was helicoptered to Aurora to undergo treatment for a fractured leg and a cut on her head. Under David and Christine's care, Brianna was accepted into Kiddie Kampus, a pre-preschool offered by Alliance Public Schools, where she made friends and found a support network. When her adoption was set to become official, Brianna's teachers for the previous two years suggested holding a class celebration. The children in Brianna's class were encouraged to make signs and drawings – and on March 4, they headed to Box Butte County Courthouse in Alliance on their school bus. Once Brianna, David and Christine's session were completed, the family headed out through the courtroom doors, where they were greeted by Brianna's classmates, who they did not know would be showing up. Having seen her friends, Brianna started jumping for joy in the lobby while her new parents fought back tears.")

_pearly-king-who-inspired-del-boy-campaigns-to-keep-cockney-tradition-alive.webp "One of the last remaining 'Pearly Kings' who was the inspiration behind Del Boy is fighting to keep the Cockney tradition alive - saying there are only around 12 left.<br/><br/>George Major, 86, who was crowned The Pearly King of Peckham more than 65 years ago, said there were once more than 400 like him.<br/><br/>But he says he is now only one of around a dozen left carrying the torch. <br/><br/>He still wears his original pearls with pride to welcome visitors six days a week at the world's only Cockney museum that he set up four years ago.<br/><br/>But he said the younger generation were shying away from the east end Victorian tradition - and it was now in grave danger of dying out for good.<br/><br/>And launching his new campaign to 'save the pearlies' he said it was vital more awareness of its history and meaning was passed down.<br/><br/>George grew up working on the market in the south-London suburb from the age of four and was such a major inspiration behind the classic sitcom Only Fools and Horses he was named “Del Boy the First”. <br/><br/>He recalls being followed at the time by the show's writer John Sullivan while he worked as a costermonger with 'Granddad Fred' and a 'lanky bloke' they called the 'plonker.'<br/><br/>The similarities don't end there - with multiple tales of his exploits being used on the show. <br/><br/>He famously once sold 'Cockney smog' - milk bottles filled with exhaust fumes - to American tourists - that's believed to be the inspiration behind the famous 'Peckham Spring' episode.<br/><br/>He was crowned the Pearly King of Peckham aged 20 - and has been collecting items ever since.<br/><br/>George now spends his days showing visitors around his museum near Epsom, Surrey, and taking his cheerful pearly way to groups, events and nursing homes - but said he was sad schools no longer invited him in for talks.<br/><br/>He said: “In 1930 there were around 400 genuine pearlies but now there are only about a dozen or so of us left.<br/><br/>“The museum helps to keep the Pearly tradition alive by teaching new generations about it.<br/><br/>\")

_disabled-student-takes-first-steps-in-10-years-on-stage-at-her-graduation.webp "A chronically ill student took her first steps in 10 years - to accept her awards for excellence at graduation. <br/><br/>Melika Ghanaati, now 19, hasn't been able to walk unaided since 2013 due to four debilitating medical conditions. <br/><br/>She was born with a severe form of scoliosis - a curved spine - as well as congenital myopathy, a disorder which has caused weakness in her muscles. <br/><br/>Growing up, she either used a walker or a wheelchair - and has needed various surgeries to correct her curved spine. <br/><br/>But after a year of intensive physiotherapy, Melika was able to walk up to her teacher unaided and receive her high school diploma, as well as two awards for excellence. <br/><br/>Melika, who is now a student at York University, Canada, said: “This was such a special moment for me - my teachers and closest friends were worried about me, but I proved everyone wrong. <br/><br/>“I wanted to surprise everyone with the walk, but most importantly, I believed I owed it to myself.”<br/><br/>Melika was born with a number of conditions - including scoliosis, severe club feet, congenital myopathy and recurring kidney stones. <br/><br/>But her scoliosis and club feet were the biggest hurdles preventing her from being able to walk. <br/><br/>Up until the age of 13, Melika had a number of surgeries in an attempt to get the curve and club feet corrected. <br/><br/>She even briefly died in ICU after surgery at the age of 12. <br/><br/>She said: “Between the ages of 10 to 13 I had three spinal surgeries.<br/><br/>“I even had a code blue - I died for a few seconds. <br/><br/>“I lost a lot of blood flow and needed to have a blood transfusion.\")
