Description:
The RNLI has launched its Float to Live campaign in Northern Ireland with a demonstration on how to carry out the technique that could prove lifesaving for anyone who finds themselves in difficulty in the water this summer.

The demonstration which highlights a person in plain clothing accidentally entering the water before using the float to live skill to survive, took place in Portrush Harbour.

There were four accidental drownings in Northern Ireland in 2023. Many people who die from accidental drownings had no intention of entering the water, such as those walking, with causes including slips, trips and falls, being cut off by the tide, or swept in by waves.

The RNLI is reminding everyone to remember Float to Live if they find themselves in trouble in water: tilt your head back with ears submerged and try to relax and control your breathing. Use your hands to help you stay afloat and then, once you are through the initial shock, call for help to or swim to safety if you can.

Finn Mullen from the RNLI’s water safety team, said: “We are approaching the summer holidays which we expect to be incredibly busy at the coast and across open water. We want everyone to enjoy being around the water but we also want to make sure people stay safe and know what to do in an emergency.

“It is important that anyone visiting open water understands the risks of the environment. Slam dunk! The best biscuit dunker in Britain has been found – and it’s a creative designer from North London.

Simon Girma won the inaugural National Dunking Championship at Underbelly Boulevard in Soho, London.

The tea and biscuit lover, aged 35, entered the McVitie's tournament which challenged eight contestants to compete in a ‘dunk off’.

They submerge their biscuit in a hot beverage for the longest duration possible without it breaking – with one point awarded for every second it was submerged.

Upon removing the biscuit, it must remain intact without breaking – failing this, the participant loses the round.

The person with the most points after three dunk offs wins, and goes on to the next round, under the watchful eye of biscuit experts.

Each round features a different biscuit, challenging contestants' knowledge of each one’s dunking characteristics.

Simon was crowned victorious after a series of intense dunk off rounds – where he played a Digestive, Rich Tea, Chocolate Hobnob and Gingernut – including a sudden death tie breaker.

In the final, both Simon and his opponent Bruno got 58 points over three rounds – and as a result, they went on to a tie break round, with Simon scoring 25 to Bruno’s 23 points.

And the biscuit that delivered the winning dunk? The Chocolate Hobnob, beloved of dunkers around the world.

Of his win, Simon said: “I’m so proud to be the winner of the first ever McVitie’s Dunking Championship.

“It was an amazing competition – credit to all the other contestants who were worthy opponents, but I knew my extensive dunk training regime would come good.

“Having a slow and steady hand, and lots of practicing with a variety of biscuits so you know each one well.”

“It just goes to show that having a biscuit with my tea has finally paid off.

A panel of judges – led by the biscuit makers chief dunking officer Dr Helen Pilcher - oversaw gameplay.

One of the standout moments of the championship was the Jaffa Cake round – a less common dunk choice, and one which flummoxed players thanks to its unique sponge-like texture.

The Rich Tea round also proved perilous, as contestants worked to keep their nerve and avoid a dunking disaster.

Research conducted by Dr Pilcher found a Hobnob can withstand 12.5 seconds of dunking - depending on hot drink temperature.

Whereas the ‘dunking danger zone’ of a Rich Tea kicks in at 8.8 seconds – deeming it a higher risk biscuit.

Dr Pilcher said: “Being the judge of the National Dunking Championship felt like the perfect evolution of my role as chief dunking officer.

“The contestants were all amazing and had brilliant biscuit knowledge.

“As a dunking enthusiast myself, it was extremely rewarding to see my dunking research put into practice and brought to life in such a unique way.”

Members of Tenby RNLI were involved in a dramatic sea rescue on Saturday evening that saw a casualty pulled from the water after a yacht was destroyed by fire.
Emergency services including - fire and ambulance crews were all on the scene at Tenby harbour for several hours whilst the Tenby’s all-weather lifeboat the Haydn Miller conducted checks around the locality for any further casualties.
The lifeboat was tasked to launch just after 7pm on Bank Holiday Saturday, May 25, following a report of smoke sighted offshore by a member of the public at Stackpole.
The Tenby volunteer crew were quickly on the water and as they rounded St Margaret’s Island just off Caldey, they spotted smoke on the horizon, some 12 miles south.
On reaching the scene, they found a 35ft yacht which had been almost totally destroyed by fire and the occupant of the yacht in the water, barely afloat and disappearing under the surface.
A crew member immediately entered the water to keep the casualty afloat, whilst the remaining crew readied to bring him aboard. Once onboard, casualty care was administered, while the lifeboat made best speed to the harbour at Tenby, where multiple Welsh Ambulance resources were waiting.
With the casualty unable to confirm if he was alone on the yacht or not, the lifeboat headed back to the scene to commence a search, where they were also joined by Angle all-weather lifeboat and Coastguard rescue helicopters from St Athan and Newquay in Cornwall.
Having thoroughly searched area for several hours in choppy seas and heavy rain and with nobody else reported missing, the search was brought to an end and all assets stood down, with the lifeboat returning to station, arriving just after 1am.
“We’d like to thanks our colleagues at Milford Haven Coastguard, Angle Lifeboat RNLI and Coastguard rescue helicopters from St Athan and Newquay for their help in this complex search and also to the Welsh Ambulance service and Tenby Fire Station,” said a spokesperson for Tenby RNLI.
“I was a great multi-agency effort.”
