A couple say their romantic getaway was ruined after the holiday caravan was so dirty they had to clean it themselves - and the furniture broke when they used it.

Charmaine Bell, 30, and Natalie Berrisford, 37, splashed out £615 for what was supposed to be nice break.

But they say the holiday to Norfolk was ruined by the “dirt pit” caravan - which they say had wallpaper hanging off the walls, mold in the loo and a mucky fridge.

They say the sofas in the property were full of “hard lumps” and the bed slats were so broken they were left sleeping at an angle.

Despite complaining to the holiday company, 2C Holidays, they say they had to stay in the “filthy” caravan for nine nights.

Charmaine, from Royston, Herts., said: “It's really upset me and my partner, we’ve been together 13 years and thought we’d have a nice holiday with the dogs.

“From the second we got to the caravan and walked in it was dirty.

“There was wallpaper coming away from walls, mold in the corners of the room and under the lid of the toilet, the sides were dirty, and the fridge had sticky stuff in it, it was filthy.

“The sofas had really big hard lumps in bottom of them - every time we sat down, we were sat on an angle.”

The couple arrived in Hemsby for a romantic getaway on March 6 – but say as soon as they walked into the caravan at the holiday park they found it filthy.

They say they were looking forwards to spending quality time together with their dogs, with Nathalie travelling down from Scotland for the trip.

But they say when they complained to 2C Holidays about the conditions, they were told they could clean it themselves or spend another £300 to be upgraded to a new caravan.

Charmaine said she decided to clean herself – and says the company offered her £50 for her efforts.

The couple say at the end of their stay they were offered £75 compensation – but claim after the £50 for cleaning, this leaves just £25 for their inconvenience.

“We couldn't pay out for a new caravan, there was literally nowhere else we could go, so it was very upsetting,” said Charmaine.

“Nathalie had a serious back surgery a couple of years ago and she nearly went through the bed.

“She came down from Scotland and this happened, it was just so upsetting, we were literally trapped there.”

A spokesperson for 2C Holidays said: \

Children would rather run free while playing outside over more organised games of hide and seek or sports.

A poll, of 2,000 parents of children aged 6-10 and the kids themselves, found 57 per cent named running around as their favourite thing to do.

And 43 per cent wish they could do it more.

It also emerged 75 per cent of kids feel happiest when they’re free to ‘play their own way’ without structure.

And 53 per cent get excited when they get to choose what they want to do for the day, with 54 of mums and dads wanting to incorporate more of this into their daily routines.

The research was commissioned by Dairylea, which has unveiled a giant backpack containing children’s top 10 psychologist-approved items which enable them to enjoy unstructured play, includingbinoculars, magnifying glasses and telescopes.

Dr Elizabeth Kilbey, behavioural child psychologist, who is working with the cheese brand, said: “Play, particularly unstructured play, helps develop children's emotional, physical and cognitive skills, builds confidence and aids social and decision-making skills.

“This form of play is proven to support cognitive, physical, emotional and social development - but at a more granular level boosts imagination, problem-solving, social skills and creativity.

“It’s hugely beneficial for all the family to experience these firsts and moments of discovery together.”

The study also found 33 per cent of kids who enjoy playing outside named exploring as their preferred activity, while climbing trees (20 per cent), and paddling in water (19 per cent) were also popular.

It’s not just good for the children though as 52 per cent of parents feel happy and 26 feel calm when they let their children play freely.

While 35 per cent per cent those surveyed, via OnePoll, claimed their favourite way to spend time together as a family is exploring all nature has to offer, or taking a picnic on a day out (32 per cent).

But parents take their children on an average of three fewer days out a month now than they used to, with 76 per cent citing cost as the driving force behind this change.

Instead, 57 per cent opt to let their children play indoors with toys to fill their free time together.

The constraints of everyday routine can also leave little time for families to explore freely and enjoy moments of pure playfulness together, with 59 per cent prioritising school, hobbies and their children’s friends, leaving little time for other activities.

Clo Darie Lheureux, from Dairylea, which is launching ‘Discovery Days’ in partnership with Trainline to offer £10 off family rail tickets, said: “We believe it’s important to give children the freedom to discover but recent strains on family life - with the Cost of Living crisis and the pandemic - have prevented families from taking on new experiences.

\

Dubai's highly advanced infrastructure bore the brunt of an unprecedented rainstorm earlier this week, shattering records and sparking chaos across the city. From April 15 to April 17, torrential rains inundated Dubai, surpassing the UAE's annual rainfall average in a matter of days. The deluge brought operations at Dubai Airport to a standstill, submerged malls, and swept away cars on the roads. With this being the heaviest rainfall witnessed in the past 75 years, concerns about climate change have been reignited worldwide. UAE's state-run weather agency has dubbed the unexpected downpour as \
