An 80-year-old donated a rare original parachute dummy from D-Day to a museum - after mistaking it for a scarecrow.<br/><br/>Robert Bowley was clearing out his late brother's home when he came across the dummy.<br/><br/>His brother Michael Bowley had been fond of French collectors items and got it while on a trip to Normandy in the 1950s or 1960s.<br/><br/>Robert said he had initially mistaken it for a scarecrow before he passed it along to a museum.<br/><br/>That's when he discovered it was in fact a rare surviving D-Day artefact worth thousands.<br/><br/>The 'scarecrow' was one of several hundred from Operation Bodyguard, part of Operation Overlord, on June 6 1944.<br/><br/>Paradummies, made of hessian cloth, straw and sawdust, were dropped to create fake invasions by allied forces to divert enemy attention from the Normandy landing beaches.<br/><br/>Most of the dummies had a self-destroying mechanism to destroy the evidence - making this surviving dummy rare and valuable.<br/><br/>The paradummy is thought to be worth around £10,000 and one of less than 30 still in existence.<br/><br/>It is now on permanent display in the D-Day exhibition at House on the Hill Toy Museum.<br/><br/>Robert, a retired watchmaker and antique collector from Braintree, Essex, said: \

_work-underway-to-save-tenby-39s-historic-golf-course-from-further-erosion.webp "Work to save Tenby Golf Club’s course from further erosion is underway, although some have labelled the plans as a ‘scar’ on the seaside town’s South Beach.<br/>Known as the ‘birthplace of Welsh Golf’ Tenby’s links golf course established in 1888, has over many years, and even more so in recent times, suffered from the ongoing effects of coastal erosion and storm damage at points along its interface with South Beach.<br/>Despite the erection of some ‘soft defences’ at the foot of the dunes, the actions of ‘mother nature’ has now impacted the course to such an extent that parts of adjacent holes are being lost to the erosion.<br/>Two years ago, the Golf Club submitted plans to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority with proposals to construct a ‘coastal defence project’ to protect the course situated alongside from further erosion.<br/>The application proposed the erection of a ‘temporary coastal defence system’ incorporating gabion baskets and ‘mattresses’ made of steel frames and filled with stone, to be set out in front and laid on top of the existing dune system for an approximate length of 200 metres, to protect the dunes and golf course adjacent to them from storm damage and erosion, for a period of up to 10 years.<br/>The plans were submitted by STRI (acting as the Club’s agent) who are specialists in sports and golf course development, construction, and reconstruction.<br/>Work has finally got underway this month, towards the Penally end of the beach and dunes, however one resident of the village which the golf course encompasses, has been left less than impressed at the early stages of the plans progressing.<br/>“This is the current works being carried out by the Tenby Golf Club members for the sum of £120,000, but in my humble opinion it's a scar on a precious Tenby/Penally visitor asset,” said Penally villager Dave Laming.<br/>Members of Tenby Civic Society also expressed several concerns at the time the application was approved by PCNPA as to the impact on the character of the beach and the locality.<br/>“The South Beach is still a natural beach backed by dunes, but the proposal will make it look more like a man made environment,” said Harry Gardiner from the Civic Society.<br/>“Over the years, damaged by the sea, the caissons would be very unattractive - would they be removed then?” he added.<br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/>")

_are-allergies-interfering-with-your-social-life.webp "Nearly a quarter of Americans (22%) have missed out on at least five outdoor events they wanted to attend over the past year because of allergies (65%), according to new research.<br/><br/>In a survey of 2,000 adults, half of whom have perennial/seasonal allergies, found that respondents said having allergies or knowing someone who does has prevented them from being outdoors at some point within the past year (49%).<br/><br/>Though spending time outside is important to nearly all of those surveyed (92%), 56% say that having allergies or knowing someone who has them has dampened how much they’re able to enjoy outdoor events.<br/><br/>Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of ZYRTEC, the survey looked at how allergies impact both allergy sufferers and non-sufferers, causing them to miss out on the things they love.<br/><br/>The survey also revealed that allergy sufferers are feeling the strain of missed connections. Many are expressing “annoyance” (65%) and “frustration” (47%) when their symptoms get in the way of spending time with loved ones.<br/><br/>And 68% of respondents recall a time in the past year when they or someone they spent time with was distracted by their allergies.<br/><br/>One in five (22%) feel like they “always” or “often” have to make sacrifices when it comes to spending time outdoors.<br/><br/>Pet owners who have allergies said that these downsides carry over to time spent with their furry friend, from limiting the time they can play outside (38%) to going on walks (37%), or even being around their pet (24%).<br/><br/>One-third (39%) of non-pet-owning allergy sufferers said if they didn’t have allergies, they would own a pet.<br/><br/>“We’re seeing allergy season starting earlier and lasting longer, which means common allergy symptoms like sneezing, runny nose and itchy, watery eyes can make a real impact,” said Dr. Tania Elliott, allergist and ZYRTEC partner. “If left untreated, allergies can be a real burden not just on your plans, but they can lead to poor sleep and reduce overall productivity.”<br/><br/>In fact, allergy sufferers also state that their symptoms affect their ability to think clearly (61%) and perform at their best (75%).<br/><br/>Nearly a third even feel self-conscious (29%) about their allergy symptoms, while over half (67%) worry about being less enjoyable for others to be around when their allergies flare up.<br/><br/>To do their part, non-sufferers navigate hurdles to help their loved ones feel comfortable, like keeping allergy medication with them (43%) or deep cleaning their home and keeping it free of allergens (34%).<br/><br/>When planning for outdoor meetups with friends and family who are affected, non-allergy sufferers check the pollen and air quality (27%) or choose indoor areas entirely (20%).<br/><br/>“There are steps you can take to ensure you don’t miss out and can enjoy outdoor moments this allergy season,” said Dr. Elliott. “Wear hats and sunglasses to keep allergens out of your hair and eyes and be sure to leave your shoes at the front door to avoid tracking allergens into the house. You can also take an oral antihistamine which can start working quickly to provide long-lasting relief from allergies.”<br/><br/>What would a life unburdened by allergies look like? If they weren’t affected as much by the outdoors, allergy sufferers would most want to go on more picnics (40%), park days (39%), hikes (32%), nature tours (30%) and visit fairs (26%).<br/><br/>Survey methodology:<br/>This random double-opt-in survey of 1,000 people with seasonal perennial allergies + 1,000 people without seasonal perennial allergies was commissioned by Kenvue, the makers of Zyrtec between March 4 and March 11, 2024.
