Amazing slow-motion footage captures the moment an owl flew out over a climber in a ‘once in a lifetime’ moment.

The video, captured by Will Birkett, 28, shows the bird leap from its perch as he scaled a quarry wall in Silverdale, Lancs.

He reaches into the hold where the owl is sheltering, unaware the bird is there, and the owl then takes flight – wings skimming the top of his head.

Will, who was climbing without the aid of ropes, was filming for his social media account @willbirkett_lakes when the moment happened.

And he said while it was common for climbers to disturb crows and ravens throughout their climbing career, the owl was a ‘once in a lifetime’ moment.

Will, from Langdale Valley, Lake District, said: “I was going up a crack in a local quarry and just as I was reaching out to grab the hold, the owl came out of nowhere.

“It’s unique that it’s an owl. Climbers will quite often disturb birds not knowing they’re there.

“More typically it's a crow or raven, an owl is unusual – it was once in a lifetime.

“You can’t really afford to jump in that situation, I was climbing without a rope or anything.

“I had no choice but to hold on and deal with it - it was quite alarming at the time for sure.”

An Antiques Roadshow expert has bought a former chapel for 60K to convert into a home and workshop - and is calling on others to ‘save these historic structures’.

Wayne Colquhoun, 60, bought Capel Salem in Corris in Wales - which still had a pulpit with a Bible in.

He says he fell in love with the 1868 romantic slate structure which had fallen into disrepair.

The Grade II listed chapel upkeep became too expensive for the diminishing congregation and was on the market in 2017.

Across Wales, chapels fall into the landscape through disrepair, demolition or ‘insensitive conversion’.

He bought the chapel for £60k, transforming the upper gallery into a three-bed apartment, adding floorboards covering half the gallery.

Wayne said: “When I bought it the bible was still on the pulpit, as though the congregation had walked out and closed the door.

“When people close the doors on old buildings- that’s the danger point. It gets damp and dry rot sets in.

“These historic structures are evocative of Welsh history and have to be saved - we need people who will put their heart and soul into them because it’s easy to butcher conversions.”

He aims to maintain the lower space and Canadian pitch pine panelling for use as his Antiques and Fine Art shop, moved from Liverpool, plus a pottery and sculpture workshop.

He aims to keep as many original features of the property as possible, from its single-glazed arched windows to reusing the pews as kitchen work surfaces.

Nearby, three chapels closest to Capel Salem have closed permanently to worship.

Wayne is in the process of transforming the lower level into his antiques and fine art shop.

He hopes to hold talks and workshops in the space, aiming to build up to employing locals and 'giving back' to the community.

Just 500 feet away sits Holy Trinity Church which closed its doors in 2020 not through lack of attendance, but through disrepair.

Neil Sumner chair of Welsh Religious Buildings Trust wrote that the redundancy of chapels in Wales is due to a 19th century ‘expansionist fervour’ of Nonconformist Chapels (i.e. Baptists, Congregationalists, Methodists).

In 1800 Caernarfonshire there were 30 chapels, rising to 221 in 1851, representing a 700 per cent increase.

Combining this flurry of builds with the 20th-century fall in attendance, Sumner wrote “the result is there are now too many buildings for current needs”.

In an attempt to preserve the character of the increasing chapel conversions, historic environment service Cadw has issued guidelines including keeping the front of the chapels untouched, retaining rooms with self-supporting partitions and allowing ‘characteristic features to show through the new walls and floors’.

Meanwhile the Buildings Trust attempt to conserve Welsh chapels through fundraising and management.

After leaving school Wayne went on to become a specialist in the restoration of historic and listed buildings.

Wayne has run an art gallery for over two decades and is an indepe

Boris-style ‘pay as you go’ E-bikes have been launched in Pembrokeshire towns such as Tenby this month, but the initiative has already been hit with scepticism by members of the public, as well as councillors.
The Pembrokeshire County Council trial scheme will see a fleet of E-bikes provided for members of the public to use for commuting, leisure and local activities; with users will simply able to collect and leave the bikes at a handy series of pick-up and drop-off sites around the towns of Tenby, Haverfordwest, Fishguard and Goodwick.

However, members of the public have had their say already on potential issues that the scheme might bring with it, with some labelling such E-bikes as ‘death traps’.
“This is a very bad idea, imagine all the compensation claims when all the accidents start! Look at the state of the roads, potholes everywhere!” posted one person on social media. Another stated: “God help us pedestrians, ordinary bikes are bad enough, but you don't hear these things coming at speed, when you have limited mobility and are slow you can't get out the way quick enough.”
Others have expressed concerns on the E-bikes being ‘dumped’ on the seaside town’s beaches...and even in the harbour sluice, echoing concerns first raised by Tenby Town Council’s Deputy Mayor Cllr Charles Dale when the idea was first touted to councillors last year.

Cllr Dale told his colleagues that, in principle it was a ‘great idea’ - however, he hoped that it worked out better than in Cardiff, where all the capital city’s bikes appeared to be seemingly stolen or vandalised, leading to the scheme ending.
Ideas for potential locations for the E-bike bays to be cited in Tenby have been seemingly ignored too by PCC’s officers, with none of the suggested locations taken up, according to Tenby Town Council’s clerk Andrew Davies.
“Back in December, when PCC informed us of the pilot they gave us a raft of suggested locations; and we met with Will Davies to get a bit more detail and suggested possible sites,” he said.
“Other than the invite to the launch - that was the last we heard about the scheme.
“None of the suggested Town Council locations have been taken up,” remarked Mr Davies.
Locations the E-bikes are available from, include - North Beach car park; The Glebe; Heywood Lane; Tenby Leisure Centre; Salterns car park; Tenby multi-storey; South Beach car park; and Tenby Railway Station.
One such ‘E-bike bay’ has popped up alongside Tenby’s historic town walls, the importance of which have been highlighted by town councillors in recent years.
Tenby’s County Councillor for the South ward, Cllr Sam Skyrme-Blackhall is none too pleased with the location either, stating: “I do not like the look of the bikes in front of the Town Walls.
“I do have concerns about the scheme in general. I know that they work very well in some places but I am not sure about in Tenby.
“I am especially concerned about them within the Town Walls during pedestrianisation and other busy periods.”
